Print o'the Wave Stole

Here is a picture of my lace stole, knitted from 2/28 laceweight cashmere. I used size 2US Susan Bates needles. The pattern is from Eunny Jang (www.EunnyJang.com), with 5 repeats across the width rather than 4, and extra repeats for the length as well. Less than one cone was needed.

Swatch

Wednesday 17 January 2007 10:32:38 pm

I just received three cones of Johnston's of Elgin 2/7 NM in a green with flecks of colour in it. It is dk weight. I knit the swatch with size 5 US or 3.75 mm addie turbo circular needles. It is a beautiful yarn to work with, quite soft. After washing and tumbling dry, it becomes deliciously soft. It will make a nice sweater.

Lace swatch in cashmere 4-ply, 2/16nm

I love playing with these yarns! Swatch knit with US5, 3.75mm, Inox greys from 1 strand of Kingfisher. Washed in Dawn, fluffed in dryer and blocked. Swatch is 21st/30rows measuring 9.5cm/10cm after blocking. Very soft and drapey.

2/16 Capelet

Tuesday 16 January 2007 8:23:00 pm

Capelet knitted with 3 plies of Colourmart's Plum Cashmere 2/16 simply held together, using KnitPick's Options needles size US 8 and twisting the yarn briefly for the YarnOvers. I had a harder time getting a very soft bloom from this cashmere - washing in hot water with dishwashing liquid was not sufficient to remove the oils. Better results were achieved using hot water and hair shampoo, sudsing and soaking, followed by a swish through hair conditioner in water. This used approximately 2 and 1/3 of the 150 gram cones - with no weaving in of ends necessary!

Raglan Vee neck with body shaping by Jill

Knitted with Brighton Rock 100% cashmere fingering 50/140tex yarn 2 plies on 4mm needles, stitch count was exactly 22st and 30 rows/10cm, resulting in a firm but extremely soft fabric. Garment weighed exactly 300g. Hand washed twice in Softly and then a fabric conditioner to finish. It was a Christmas gift for my 19yo daughter. (Looks a bit grubby around neck & cuff, but just shadows from pic.)

Cashmere/Cotton Gansey Swatch

Liz Lovick's Orkney pattern using 6 strands of 2/28 cashmere cotton on US 4 needles... excellent stitch definition, and oh-so-soft. Any baby would love to snuggle up in this yarn (and so would I). Great choice for year-round next to the skin wear or warmer climates.

Cashmere/Silk Blend, 65% cashmere / 35% silk, 2/60nm

Sunday 14 January 2007 8:04:50 pm

These mitts, one blocked, the other still ONT, were knit out of 4 strands of the Cashmere/Silk blend in black. I used Crystal Palace US#1.5 bamboo needles, 2.5mm, adding an extra 4 rows to the cuff, and wooly nylon to the wrist portion. Unblocked gauge: 9st/12rws = 1" in St st. Blocked gauge: 9st/10rws = 1" in St st. Washed in Dawn, then tumble dried on delicate for 15 minutes till slightly damp, and blocked out for the lace. Very soft and lofty; glad I added the wooly nylon as it helps keep the mitt in place. Pattern from Interweave Knits Magazine, Winter 2006, Wine and Roses Mitts, designed by Jolene Treace. Pattern calls for about 400 yds lace weight yarn.

angora/lambswool LIME - 2/28 Nm used single on fine gauge machine - 145 grams

Sunday 14 January 2007 3:29:30 pm

This one was knitted as an experiment: first sweater on the fine gauge machine, different techniques for casting-on, sew and cut all along, Passap-style neckband, first attempt at drawing a pattern (I mean a pattern for a garment, not a stitch pattern).
It is still unsatisfactory, but a definite progress!
The gauge is 67 rows x 48.5 stitches.
The yarn bloomed quite nicely, it is very soft (not as soft as cashmere, though). It needs more than one wash to get its full development. As it was a series of experiments, I machine-washed, tumble-dried and steamed each part before assembly; but the ribbing was washed once only, whereas stocking stitch parts underwent it twice. The difference, both in texture and colour, is obvious.

What does "signature" means in this context????? I'm just a poor lonesome foreigner...

Cashmere Plum 4-ply swatch knit with 2 strands

Sunday 14 January 2007 6:41:32 am

This swatch is knit from 2 srands of the Plum 4-ply cashmere, 2/16nm, with the intent of getting a dense fabric for gloves and socks. The top section was knit with US 3 needles (3.25mm), middle section US 4 (3.5mm) and bottom section US 5 (3.75mm). Prewashed stitch and row count per inch was approx. 6.75st/9rows; 6.75st/9rows; 6.5st/8rows resepectively. After washing in Dawn twice with the hottest tap water available and tumble drying for about 15-20 minutes on delicate, my swatch had shrunk only a litle; 6.7st/10rws; 6.5st/10rws; 6st/10rws, but it had become extremely soft and dense.

Cashmere Capelet 2/16

Tuesday 09 January 2007 2:01:09 am

Capelet with 3 plies knitted together of Colourmart's Plum Cashmere 2/16 on KnitPick's Options needles size US 8. Note that darker colors like this Plum are often not as soft as lighter colors - people with sensitivities should stick to lighter colors. This used approximately 2 and 1/3 of the 150 gram cones

Lace scarf

Tuesday 09 January 2007 1:15:47 am

Here's a scarf that I just finished blocking. It's fingering weight, I think M7045 (I lost the card, but it's a 3-ply grey, light grey, off-white yarn). This was knit with US7 needles, cast on 36 stitches and the pattern can be found free at http://www.carylldesigns.com/wavy_feathers_scarf.htm
From the picture, you can see how much yarn I had left from the 250yd skein. I washed it again by hand then blocked it using blocking wires. It's actually much darker than the picture shows.

Edited: fingering weight Black gray No111. Pattern gauge: 5st/in X 7row/in 50grams used for this scarf. Final measurements: 55inX5in

Cashmere/Cotton Baby Hat

Monday 08 January 2007 9:57:54 pm

Here is a crocheted baby hat made with 2/28 cashmere cotton, using a G crochet hook (very loosely). It fluffed nicely and is very very soft. My own design, for a friend's premie baby boy. I made a blanket to go with it but forgot to get a picture before I gave it to her.

Baby cover-up

Sunday 07 January 2007 9:23:10 pm

This baby's poncho was made with oddments of yarn. Some were aran weight already; others were made up to aran weight by using 2 strands of DK or 3 strands of fingering. I used 6 mm (US10) needles for most of it, with a tension of 4 sts per inch and about 7 rows to the inch.

The poncho, which will fit a baby from about 6 to 18 months, weighs 260 g. Here it is on a 3 month sized doll - and is too big for it!!

Bookmark and swatching

Saturday 06 January 2007 10:46:42 pm

I'm making a shawl from Victorian Lace Today using Richard's laceweight smooth silk, but I had to rip it twice due to the fabric looking too loose and sloppy. I decided to make little project swatches instead -- bookmarks. This is a bookmark using the lace pattern from VLT -- the Dolphin Lace scarf. This lace pattern allows me to check gauge and I end up with something useful too. On the right is one strand of silk (navy) knit with US2 Susan Bates, and the other is iris blue knit exactly the same, but with US3 needles--sloppy and sad, no? I'm finding that my favorite bamboo needles are too grabby and it's difficult to move along 100 plus stitches. The amount used for the bookmarks? That would be a sample's worth. Swatching? Priceless.
specs:
100% silk laceweight single strand
#2 US Susan Bates needles (metal)
Cast-on 12 stitches
pattern from p106 VLT

DK Cashmere/Merino Ribbed Hat

Saturday 06 January 2007 7:06:17 pm

This hat was made with the DK weight cashmere/merino blend yarn in color aqua moon. It was hand knit on size 6 circular/double pointed needles. This yarn has more spring than the 100% cashmere yarns and seems to hold stitch definition well (of course both yarns are yummy). This pattern is my own design.

Fingering weight sweater including hand dyed yarns.

Friday 05 January 2007 11:29:02 am

This is a sweater in fingering weight cashmere. I hand dyed the turquoise yarn to produce a variegated effect - the original colour was pink. The background yarns are fingering weights, or combinations of laceweights to produce the same thickness. The sweater is based on the Kaffe Fasset Stone Circles design, and was knitted on 3.25mm needles with a tension of 24 stitches and 36 rows to 4 inches.
