Crop top and jacket in DK

Thursday 22 May 2008 4:22:14 pm

This is a crop top and jacket in the wool/silk or silk noil or linen DK. As you can see I have done both small and large sizes!! The pattern will be here very soon.

The top and jacket are knitted on 9 mm needles, with a tension of 12 sts and 16 rows to the inch.

They do not have to be knitted as cropped - make them any length you like. The pattern makes it clear how to do it.

PS - pix didn't turn up first time - try again....

Thanks Beverley - Credit to Bad Cat Designs

Thursday 22 May 2008 2:29:31 pm

Thanks for the kind words, Beverley . The credit for the design must go to to Bad Cat Designs (love her patterns!) and this particular pattern can be found for free on her blog (http://badcatdesigns.blogspot.com/). It's an addictive one to knit! I actually have it going in two different yarns at the moment, hehehe. It's my first time using beads and it really does add a nice touch. The chance to show the contrast with the bloom seemed too good to pass up. It's something I think we all wonder about when first using the oiled yarns.

I think your shawl will be great - I love how gray goes with just about everything. I might have to re-read that pattern (I have the magazine). Using beads for that will be neat, I hope you'll post an update so we can see how it looks.

Lara's White "Bloom"

Thursday 22 May 2008 10:23:59 am

Lara - your design is gorgeous. I had at first thought that you had used 2 different sized needles. I especially love the glass beads, Looking at my own design - which I detailed earlier yesterday, I think when it comes to adding a new grey colour, I too am going to add some beads for that extra effect. Would love to see the finished item.

Beverley

Fishnet Shawl

Thursday 22 May 2008 6:50:49 am

A bit of an emergency project for a friend at work (her daughter's wedding....nothing to wear....). Basic. But still nice and took all my spare time for the last few weeks . The pattern, such as it is, is just fishnet lace with some garter edging. If anyone wants the full instructions, feel free to message me. I'll get a posting on my blog eventually as well. (http://larascreations.blogspot.com/)

3/44 100% Merino, Forget-me-not blue - love the yarn. Easy to work with, soft even still in oil.
3.25 mm needles
Dressed gauge ~ 22 stitches/4"
Finished size - dressed to 17"x60"
Used ~36grams (576 yards)

Forgive the boring office photo . I was a bit pressed for time and didn't want to give it away without any pictures.

The fluff factor, commonly referred to as "bloom"

Thursday 22 May 2008 6:34:18 am

I have the Veil of Isis (Bad Cat Designs) on the needles (2.5mm) in 2/28 50/50 Cash/cotton........and I had gotten something on the center. Since I started to worry & wonder if it would wash out.....I went ahead and washed it to be sure. As a result, I thought some folks might be interested in the contrast between the washed center (which may bloom a bit more with proper finishing of the whole project). I assure you it's not my gauge changing . Hopefully it shows up ok......

electric skein reel machine

How AWESOME is that winding machine!

Would it be possible for you to send one more closer photo of the first shot, the one that shows the skein on it, please?

That is GREAT!!!

electric skein reel machine

My father, Jean Harlez, has made me an electric skein reel machine. It can easily make reels out of new cone-mounted thread which is still oiled. On reels, the yarn can therefore easily be washed before being used.

Design time for Beverley

Wednesday 21 May 2008 4:41:43 pm

After spending the past 6 - 9 months on charity knitting or making babywear for pregnant friends - I thought it was about time I made something for myself. Flicking through the Spring 2008 issue of Spin-Off (an excellent American publication geared towards spinners & weavers) I came across an article/images on the making of Traditional Danish Tie-Shawls.

My photograph shows the beginning of the design on my circular needles (Size 7/ 4.5mm needles) I wanted to use differerent shades of grey and was lucky to see that the Bargain Set obtained by Colourmart had quite a few of the different yarns in that colour. To finish off I intend to have a crochet edging using 2 different coloured yarns (as yet not sure which - maybe fuschia pink/white?)

Will send an update next month.

Beverley (with 4 different Colourmart projects on the go!!!)

Dear Shirley
I am glad you like my doll, but ... well ... the problem is my English ... Lets try ! :
I made at least 12 dolls 25 years ago for family and friends kids. It was adapted from a pattern I found somwhere ... Six months ago one of this kids (who is the daughter of a close friend) had a baby and she asked me to make a doll for her daughter, because hers is still alive and well ! of course I had lost the pattern and it was very difficult to remember but as you know I did it !
What I could do (if you can wait) is to write the pattern in french, and then I will try to translate it in English. But if you know how to make baby socks it is very easy, you make a sock (which is the first "foot" you continue up to the top of the leg (with 4 needles). Then you make the second "foot" and leg on the same way, you put the two legs together and you continue the "body". For the top of the body and arms, you do like a "pullover", you see what I mean ? Oh it is too hard to explain in English. But I will try to do it next week.
Thank you Shirley. Have a nice week end !

Yak swatch

Saturday 10 May 2008 6:03:59 pm

I was very excited when I heard about YAK yarn. I made a swatch right away, using #4 needle. After washing the swatch, it came out very fluffy and soft. I decided to use a bigger needle for more lacier look.

Swan Lake/MS3

Saturday 10 May 2008 5:59:24 pm

I just finished the MS3/ Swan Lake stole by using 3 strands of Extra Fine Merino in Raspberry. Instead of adding the wing, I continued with a straight line. Size is 24" X 84", slightly bigger than expected, but I like it very much. I washed it in warm water with shampoo and rinsed it in the same temperature water and hair conditioner. The yarn is very soft, almost like cashmere. I would recommend this yarn for any kind of knitting when budgeting is limited

4/10NM 100% linen dk weight cone ecru OR NOT!!! Step 3 or 3

Friday 09 May 2008 1:39:41 pm

I forgot to mention that I started this dyeing yarn last Sunday and with the excellent weather it took just over 3 hours for the dyed hanks to dry. It was a lovely sight seeing them hung on my washing line blowing in the breeze.

With this image, if you look closely you can see some of the other colours from the 4 hanks been rolled up into a rough ball. As each of the hanks were untied and with the aid of my wool winder I created a large ball of wool - starting with the pale yellow colour.

The baby pram throw will be made in one strip with my Addi Turbo needles (8/4mm). I'll cast on 150 stitches and with both cones (2 rows per cone) I will start by knitting 10 rows of garter stitch. I then intend to create a large panel of stocking stitch using 134 stitches. With the remaining 16 stitches (8 on each side) I will then create panels of moss stitch. To complete I will finish off by knitting 10 rows of garter stitch.

Following Richard's email this a.m. about the Linen or Silk/Wool yarn - I'll need to check the spare cone to see if I have indeed been sent the Linen yarn. In any case, I'm **VERY** pleased with the yarn and the results and can't wait to finish it. Photos will follow mid end June (if not earlier!!)

4/10NM 100% linen dk weight cone ecru OR NOT!!! Step 2or 3

Friday 09 May 2008 1:14:53 pm

Before the dye was applied, I soaked the hanks of yarns into boiling hot water (along with a small amount of washing up liquid and white vinegar) for c an hour. I then gently squeezed out the excess water and then left the yarns to soak in white vinegar and water for another hour.

The dyes used were food colouring - Yellow and Blue - plus one of the Omega Dyes (Disco Pink!) I mixed each in a solution of water/white vinegar. I decided to use the microwave to set the dyes and carefully spread out 4 double layers of clingfilm. Each of the hank was laid on each of the 4 clingfilm mats . I then applied the dyes to each hank (mixing blue/yellow in another container to get the pastel green) I carefully wrapped each of the hanks - within the clingfilm - like a sausage and put on a large cardboard circular plate which was then popped into the microwave.

I then left the skeins to cool before putting it in my dye pan which I had filled with water - see image.

4/10NM 100% linen dk weight cone ecru OR NOT!!! Step 1 or 3

Friday 09 May 2008 12:59:22 pm

Yet another friend is expecting her 1st baby in October. Following my offer to make her a throw, she requested her delight at this gift but requested it being made in pastel colours. Having seen Richard's recent email about the linen dk weight (I've yet to make a garment using this fibre) I thought I would try my hand with this yarn and therefore purchased 2 cones.

This photo shows one cone (unused). The other cone - with the aid of my niddy noddy has been divided into 4 hanks - each of which will be dyed in a different colour.

Neckerchief from Yarn Forward, using smooth silk

Wednesday 07 May 2008 7:20:52 pm

When I was making the shawl, it struck me that some folk might not want to make such a large item. I therefore made a neckerchief using the tip of the pattern.... Several relatives got these last Christmas in a variety of colours... Must make one for me... Liz
