Cashmere/Cotton Baby Hat

Here is a crocheted baby hat made with 2/28 cashmere cotton, using a G crochet hook (very loosely). It fluffed nicely and is very very soft. My own design, for a friend's premie baby boy. I made a blanket to go with it but forgot to get a picture before I gave it to her.

Pretty Petals cashmere socks

Yarn: 100% Cashmere 4 ply weight
Needles: size 0
Pattern: Jeannie Townsend's Pretty Petals

These were a Christmas gift for one of my many Sisters-in-law. I added a strand of woolly nylon to the entire foot.

Baby cover-up

This baby's poncho was made with oddments of yarn. Some were aran weight already; others were made up to aran weight by using 2 strands of DK or 3 strands of fingering. I used 6 mm (US10) needles for most of it, with a tension of 4 sts per inch and about 7 rows to the inch.

The poncho, which will fit a baby from about 6 to 18 months, weighs 260 g. Here it is on a 3 month sized doll - and is too big for it!!

Bookmark and swatching

I'm making a shawl from Victorian Lace Today using Richard's laceweight smooth silk, but I had to rip it twice due to the fabric looking too loose and sloppy. I decided to make little project swatches instead -- bookmarks. This is a bookmark using the lace pattern from VLT -- the Dolphin Lace scarf. This lace pattern allows me to check gauge and I end up with something useful too. On the right is one strand of silk (navy) knit with US2 Susan Bates, and the other is iris blue knit exactly the same, but with US3 needles--sloppy and sad, no? I'm finding that my favorite bamboo needles are too grabby and it's difficult to move along 100 plus stitches. The amount used for the bookmarks? That would be a sample's worth. Swatching? Priceless.
specs:
100% silk laceweight single strand
#2 US Susan Bates needles (metal)
Cast-on 12 stitches
pattern from p106 VLT

DK Cashmere/Merino Ribbed Hat

This hat was made with the DK weight cashmere/merino blend yarn in color aqua moon. It was hand knit on size 6 circular/double pointed needles. This yarn has more spring than the 100% cashmere yarns and seems to hold stitch definition well (of course both yarns are yummy). This pattern is my own design.

Fingering weight sweater including hand dyed yarns.

This is a sweater in fingering weight cashmere. I hand dyed the turquoise yarn to produce a variegated effect - the original colour was pink. The background yarns are fingering weights, or combinations of laceweights to produce the same thickness. The sweater is based on the Kaffe Fasset Stone Circles design, and was knitted on 3.25mm needles with a tension of 24 stitches and 36 rows to 4 inches.

Kiri shawl

I've finished my Kiri shawl, in 6/28 fingering cashmere, colour ruby, needle size 6. I got 13 leaves along the middle. It weighs 130 grams, so I realize now that I could have made another pattern repeat, but I chickened out and went for the safe solution.

Another look

Here's another look at the Hidcote Garden Shawl knit out of 2/28 laceweight cashmere in the aquamarine colorway. Here you get a sense of the loft of the shawl.

2/28 laceweight cashmere shawl

I am knitting the Hidcote Garden Shawl from mimknits.com using US 5 needles and a single strand of Richard's 2/28 laceweight cashmere in the aquamarine colorway. The yarn is a lovely dusty aqua blue color and is lighter in real life than in my scans/pictures. I am knitting it off the cone so the yarn has not been washed yet. You can see the wonderful definition of the lace patterns making this yarn excellent for complex lace designs.

Lace weight silk

This is the peppermint lace weight silk wound to 3 strands by Richard to make it fingering weight. Needles were 3.5 mm (US 4). The swatch is playing for a sleeveless top and for a kurta-shaped long sleeved cover up.

The swatch is very floppy and so the tops will drape well. Both the moss stitch edging (top left) and the 'holey' edging (centre) work well, and the holey edge works both when decreasing every other row (right) and when going straight (upper left).

The tension over the stocking stitch is 7 st and 9 rows per inch. The lace motif (13 sts by 21 rows) measures 2.25 ins wide by 2.5 ins high.

Swatch for a waiscoat, using 3.5 mm (US 4) needles. The holes and the bigger cable show up well, but small patterns are lost.

Tension over stocking stitch is 5 sts and 9 rows to the inch.

Fingering weight gloves

Lace Scarf knit with high twist DK

This is a seaman's scarf in Dusty Candy DK. The lace part is a variation of Feather and Fan, done over four stitches instead of the usual six, on 4.5mm needles. The rib is 4x4 on 4mm needles. If I were to make another I'd drop another size for the rib.

I usually knit loose and drop down one needle size to get gauge.

Bohus-inspired Toddler Cap

Here is another example of colorwork in 4-ply -- a child's hat using color stranded knitting inspired by the Bohus tradition, which uses purl and slip stitches along with two or more colors in a row. This was also knit circularly, but from the bottom up.

Anastasia's hat in 4-ply

I find these 4-ply yarns to be perfect for doing stranded colorwork in addition to lace. Here is a hat I designed and knit for my daughter Anastasia using various colors of 4-ply and incorporating both fair isle and lace designs. It was knit circularly from the top down.

Faina's Scarf made with Colourmart 85% braided Cashmere

This scarf was made with 85%/15% Cashmere/Nylon fingering weight. It took 1 1/2 skeins on a size US 6 needle. The yarn had been washed once when I received it and I rinsed it in hair conditioner water, then rolled it in a towel to get out as much of the water as possible and then laid it on the blocking board to dry.

Lace Shawl Knit with Colourmart Fingering weight Cashmere

My own pattern made with Colourmart fingering weight cashmere in "Blue Mack". The pattern was based on the "La Chatelaine" lace pattern from Barbra Walker's Fourth Treasury. The shawl was knit from the top down on size 6 needles. The bottom edge was knit with short rows to form the points. It is wonderfully soft and I love to wear it, getting all sorts of complements.

Samphire DK Scarf

DK scarf knit from 1 pre-washed skein of double-twisted samphire on size 7 needles. It measures 6" x 52", and is from a pattern on yarnloopie's blog; http://monika-freepatterns.blogspot.com. Although beautiful, it would have been tighter if I had bought a second skein and knit it on smaller needles.
