Close-up of Tulipa pattern

I found it impossible to show the detail of this pattern in a full-length photograph, so here is a close-up. I think you can see why it is called Tulipa.

Cashmere/cotton/silk sweater

2008年 7月 11日 金曜日 9:09:40 pm

This sweater was adapted from Elsebeth Lavold's "Tulipa" from Designer's Choice Book Eight, The Enchanted Garden Collection. I used one strand of 2/17 cotton/cashmere/silk in Sandstone, plus one strand of cashmere/lycra, plus one strand of very fine silk that I had in my stash in a hot pink. As the Sandstone is a creamy colour, the end result was a pinky/peachy shade. Because of its slubs, this yarn is particularly suited to mixing with other yarns. In size 42, the sweater weights 291g and I achieved a gauge of 7sts and 10 rows per inch on size 3.25 needles. Shrinkage after laundering is quite considerable on this yarn, but the end result is worth it. The sweater is very soft and light and ideally suited to a British "summer".

Cashmere/Silk 3/45NM Lace Weight

2008年 7月 10日 木曜日 6:22:47 pm

This is the Shetland Triangle I made from this yarn doubled throughout - so fat it is my favorite that I have made. The yarn is absolutely beautiful!.
Specs:
I used 56 grams of this yarn doubled, ~463 yard. The finished measurements are 63” wide by 23” deep.

This yarn is gorgeous, very soft with a beautiful sheen. I enjoyed working with this and have enough left to make myself a shawl too!

Sample Packs - Colourmart

2008年 7月 08日 火曜日 2:01:05 pm

This photo was taken last Saturday at Brill School (based in Aylesbury) for their School Fete. The Chiltern Spinners - of which I am a member - were in force for a "Fleece to Garment" attempt. We had a fantastic day and the feedback from visitors, staff and pupils were most encouraging. One of the teachers and a visitor were so enthused by our efforts that they also joined in with the knitting - which was great.

Our stand drew a lot of attention and though we didn't manage to finish off the knitting/making up of the garment, a child's sweater - which will be done this week - a lot of raffle tickets were sold for this item.

As can be seen from the front of the photo, this event also gave me the chance - thanks to Richard - to hand out some sample packs and free Colourmart yarns for people to use. I'm wearing an sweater which I made nearly 20 years ago using commercial yarns and it's my intention to repeat the pattern - which I created - but this time using Colourmart yarns.

Mia's Outfit - Pink Blanket

2008年 7月 04日 金曜日 1:36:46 pm

Debra - That outfit looks gorgeous on Mia - it's definitely her colour. I partciularly like the neckline. The light pink blanket - was that one that you knitted and if so, was it a Colourmart yarn?

50% cashmere/ 50% merino

2008年 7月 03日 木曜日 7:33:22 pm

Hi,
This is Mia my granddaughter (15mos), she is wearing her pink sweater, pattern by Elizabeth Zimmermann, February Two Needle Sweater. I knitted with #5 needles, gauge (before washing)1"- 5.5 sts/8 rows. After washing there was shrinkage, length of garment before wash was 17.5", after washing 15". I changed the pattern to a pullover swing sweater, knitted in the round (no seams)! I love the feel of the washed yarn, it is so soft!

Another "in-between" Small project - Baby Hat

2008年 7月 03日 木曜日 2:09:16 pm

In between spinning and "trying" to finish off my mother's blue sweater along with my Traditional Danish Shawl, I keep going back to these small projects. This item is for another ex-colleague who gave birth c 2 months ago.

I've actually used 2 strans of this yarn to create the hat. There is a "slight" bias but, nevertheless, the effect looks great.

Be warned, I've just placed a small order "1 cone" for one of Richard's latest yarns - 7/24NM dk wt aromatic cotton, Colour - Origano. I've just been given a sample of this gorgeous yarn and am going to make myself a hat to wear later this year.

Response - Frances re: Sampling

2008年 6月 19日 木曜日 12:18:58 pm

Hi Frances – many thanks for your feedback.

When using multiple cones, I tend to have them positioned on the floor to the right of me close by to the spinning wheel. In the case of using 4 cones, once the strands have been attached to the bobbin thread I will then put each of the strands through the fingers/thumb of my right hand. As I spin (with the wheel going anti-clockwise) I’ll use my left hand to guide the yarn and to control the twist.

I have to admit, I don’t tend to wash the mini-skeins or weigh them as they are usually used to make small squares for use when making throws or to give away for people to try their hands at using Colourmart’s yarns. As you can see, I’m not a disciplined spinner as I tend to be too eager to get started and am always experimenting with lots of different fibres in small quantities – that’s probably why I have so many projects on the go!!

re: Sampling/Experimenting with Colourmart Yarns

2008年 6月 18日 水曜日 6:21:02 am

Hi Beverly,
I'm curious about the multi-strand yarn you are spinning. How are you managing the twist? Will you just wash and weight it once it's spun? I've been interested in trying this, but haven't gotten around to it!
Thanks,
Frances

Sampling/Experimenting with Colourmart Yarns

2008年 6月 16日 月曜日 1:54:03 pm

Thanks to Richard's yarns - I'm afraid my spinning seems to be taking a bit of a back seat as I seem to be spending more time working with his yarns as opposed to trying to knuckle down to reduce my stash of fibres/fleeces which really needs to be tackled!!

I spent part of Saturday and early yesterday morning, with the aid of my spinning wheel and niddy-noddy making a variety of mini-skeins to give away as I was demonstrating yesterday afternoon.

For those of you who are new to Colourmart - if you haven't already purchased a sample pack - then these Bargain or Scrap sets are a great buy for sampling purposes.

Linen face (wash!) cloths and towels

2008年 6月 15日 日曜日 5:26:52 pm

These are made in the fingering linen, on 3.5 mm needles, using Shetland lace patterns. The colours are dyed with Omega dyes. Each wash cloth weighs less than 20 g, and the towels about 40 g each.

The linen yarn is somewhat springy on the cone, but softens right down when put in water. If your knitting dries stiff, scrunch it about a bit and it goes lovely and floppy-soft!!

The pattern is now with Richard.... There are three sets of wash cloth and towel. Other sizes can easily be made.

Another update - Beverley's Traditional Danish Shawl

2008年 6月 13日 金曜日 2:03:16 pm

As you can see I'm on the last leg of this design. The photo doesn't do it justice and I think when I come to make this design again (which I intend to do) I'm going to use 2 Addi Turbo needles - due to the large number of stitches.

Tomorrow sees the start of the Bucks Open Studios (a 2-week event run by The Visual Images Group). I'm going to be one of the demonstrators at the home of a fellow guild member (Marjorie Waye) on Sunday so I'm a bit disappointed that this shawl won't be ready by then. (I've still got another 10" to knit then it's got to be washed and blocked)

For Sunday's event and to give visitors the opportunity to see a variety of our crafts, I'll be switching between demonstrating using my drop spindle and Marjorie's Ashford spinning wheel as well as knitting - so I'll be taking my shawl with me. My basket, for the event, has already been packed along with some of Richards’s yarns and sample packs for visitors to try and take away. The great thing about demonstrating at Marjorie's home, during these 2 weeks is the opportunity for visitors to "touch the fibres/equipment and to have-a-go" be it weaving, spinning or knitting and it's ALL FREE!!!

Will let you know how I get on!

Beverley

DK silk noil tops in plus sizes

2008年 6月 12日 木曜日 6:10:19 pm

This is one I have made for myself!! The yarn is the DK silk noil dyed in the microwave with Omega all-in-one dyes. The colours used are marine blue and malachite mixed together to form the turquoise, with the marine blue on its own in places (well, I has some solution left..!!)

It is knitted on 6 mm needles, and my top (the smallest size on the pattern) weighs 230 g... Other of Richard's DK yarns would work just as well.

Pattern now available from Richard and my Etsy shop..!

1/14NM cashmere lace

2008年 6月 10日 火曜日 1:12:02 pm

This was adapted from 'Summer Garland', a 1950s tablecloth pattern by Marianne Kinzel, and I made it quite a while ago. With hindsight, I should have used two strands of the yarn together for the scarf to give it more strength but it is wonderfully soft and drapes well.

New swatch for Slow Bee

2008年 6月 06日 金曜日 2:01:41 am

Finally I decided to try the cob web weight for the Slow Bee KAL. The Color is Amphora and I have 3 strands twisted together. I was using #4 needle and some #6 beads. The measurement for 23 stitches and 37 rows is 5" x 6" without stretching too much. I washed it the usual way with shampoo and rinsed it with conditioner. Fluffed up very nicely and I don't even have to tell you that it is so very soft.
I have no more "fear" of cob web weight
