front of shrug with DK weight merino

I forgot to take a picture of the front of the shrug. Hey with teenagers, I was lucky to get the FIRST picture.

The cuffs are extra long because the lady who I knitted this for needs to have her hands clear while wearing this.

Merino DK yarn

I wanted to create a shrug for a very good friend. I used the merino dk yarn and print of the waves pattern size 7 (US) needles. Using a provisional cast on, started in the center back and knitted flat until I had 1/2 of the width of the back done. Joined the two edges and continued idown the sleeve in the pattern until the cuffs. I did a k1 p1 rib for the extra long cuffs. After one side was done, I removed the waste yarn, placed the stitches on the needles and continued for the left side. I did need to change where in the pattern I started so that it would look continuous.

Linen wash cloth

This is a wash cloth done in the 6/24 fingering linen. It was knitted on 3.5 mm Signature needles (thank you Kathi!) and measures 9 ins sqaure. The tension is about 23 sts and 40 rows to 4 ins.

I blocked this with wires, and when I came back to it, it was very stiff. However, a good scrunch has removed the stiffness, and it feels lovely. When wet it is very smooth - hand towels will follow!

I also dyed a bit in the microwave in a bit of odd dye. 3 samples - the darkest is silk, mid is alpaca, lightest is the linen. Bearing in mind these dyes are s'posed to be for animal fibres..!! I will be dyeing more soon...

Update on Bev's "Shades of Grey" Traditional Danish Tie-Shawls

Before Richard's website started to play up last week-end, you may remember that I uploaded an image of the beginning of my work on this design - which I found in Interweave's Spring 2008 "Spin-Off" publication.

I'm really pleased with this and have another 10" to go. I didn't realise how much yarn I would need to use (you increase twice at each end and then on either side of the middle thin panel on every alternate row!) I guessed I would soon be running out of yarn so I ordered a cone of the 1/14NM W A610 charcoal grey from Richard (which I asked to be wounded in multiples of 3 strands)

The yarns so far used for this shawl were balanced and as I didn't want to have any bias with the addition of this new yarn, I decided to do a test piece by making yet another baby hat using 5 strands of this yarn. I'm glad I did because there was some bias after the hat had been washed.

I then decided to use my Ashford spinning wheel and, going anti-clockwise - spun the 5 strands onto a bobbin. So glad I did as the resultant yarn (shown) was balanced.

A further update will appear in 2/3 weeks time! p.s. The red/white strip is part of a thin plastic bag to remind me which side is the front!

DK weight smooth silk yarn

This is a top made for my stepdaughter. I used up less than a cone of 15/50 dk weight silk, only 130 grams of it. The gauge is 22 sts and 30 rows in stockinette on 3,5 mm needles and it didn´t change when washed. The pattern is free and found on Ravelry as "maddy".

Update on Mum's Blue Sweater - 12/36NM heavy dk wt 55:45 cash/silk karma (1 of 2 images)

In March, I posted some images of a design which I had created for my mum who was, at that time, feeling a bit depressed. I had finished two sleeves and had just started on the font/back - which was going to be knitted in the round. I've slightly changed the front panel design. I have to say that knitting with the Addi Turbo circular needles makes the job so much easier. The stitches just seem to slide off the needles!! Another update in ? a month's time when the garment has been finished.

Yak vest

When I saw the yak yarn at colourmart I didn't hesitate to order it as I wanted to try yak for a long time, but could not find a shop in Germany that carries it.
The vest is knit on 3.0 mm needles (size 3 American), my gauge was 23 stitches and 32 rows before washing (I knit the oiled yarn off the cone) and 23 stitches and 36 rows for the finished/blocked garment. The pattern is my own, I used one cone in the colour magnesite and have no leftovers at all.
The yarn is incredibly soft, lightweigt and warm and I would even prefer it to cashmere. I will definitely buy and knit it again.
A scarf for my boyfriend made from the same yarn is already on my needles.

4-ply cashmere shawl

This was made from 4-ply cashmere yarn some time ago. I think it was the 2/14 cashmere in a colour called chateau - classy or what? Anyway, I first made a jumper with it, using two strands, and had quite a bit left over, so I made a shawl in this pattern for my mother. Then I still had some yarn left over, so I made this shawl for myself. Somehow my original calculation of yarn needed for the jumper seems to have been a tiny bit out, but in a good way. Unfortunately, I have no idea now how much yarn I used for the shawl in the end... The pattern is Hyrna Herborgar, and because for once I couldn't track down the book it was published in, I played around with the patterns until it sort of looked like the picture I had stumbled across somewhere. Very pleased - the shawl is just the right size, beautifully soft, and goes with a lot of things.

Crop top and jacket in DK

This is a crop top and jacket in the wool/silk or silk noil or linen DK. As you can see I have done both small and large sizes!! The pattern will be here very soon.

The top and jacket are knitted on 9 mm needles, with a tension of 12 sts and 16 rows to the inch.

They do not have to be knitted as cropped - make them any length you like. The pattern makes it clear how to do it.

Thanks Beverley - Credit to Bad Cat Designs

Thanks for the kind words, Beverley . The credit for the design must go to to Bad Cat Designs (love her patterns!) and this particular pattern can be found for free on her blog (http://badcatdesigns.blogspot.com/). It's an addictive one to knit! I actually have it going in two different yarns at the moment, hehehe. It's my first time using beads and it really does add a nice touch. The chance to show the contrast with the bloom seemed too good to pass up. It's something I think we all wonder about when first using the oiled yarns.

I think your shawl will be great - I love how gray goes with just about everything. I might have to re-read that pattern (I have the magazine). Using beads for that will be neat, I hope you'll post an update so we can see how it looks.

Lara's White "Bloom"

Lara - your design is gorgeous. I had at first thought that you had used 2 different sized needles. I especially love the glass beads, Looking at my own design - which I detailed earlier yesterday, I think when it comes to adding a new grey colour, I too am going to add some beads for that extra effect. Would love to see the finished item.

Regards

Beverley

Fishnet Shawl

A bit of an emergency project for a friend at work (her daughter's wedding....nothing to wear....). Basic. But still nice and took all my spare time for the last few weeks . The pattern, such as it is, is just fishnet lace with some garter edging. If anyone wants the full instructions, feel free to message me. I'll get a posting on my blog eventually as well. (http://larascreations.blogspot.com/)

3/44 100% Merino, Forget-me-not blue - love the yarn. Easy to work with, soft even still in oil.
3.25 mm needles
Dressed gauge ~ 22 stitches/4"
Finished size - dressed to 17"x60"
Used ~36grams (576 yards)

Forgive the boring office photo . I was a bit pressed for time and didn't want to give it away without any pictures.

The fluff factor, commonly referred to as "bloom"

I have the Veil of Isis (Bad Cat Designs) on the needles (2.5mm) in 2/28 50/50 Cash/cotton........and I had gotten something on the center. Since I started to worry & wonder if it would wash out.....I went ahead and washed it to be sure. As a result, I thought some folks might be interested in the contrast between the washed center (which may bloom a bit more with proper finishing of the whole project). I assure you it's not my gauge changing . Hopefully it shows up ok......

electric skein reel machine

How AWESOME is that winding machine!

Would it be possible for you to send one more closer photo of the first shot, the one that shows the skein on it, please?

That is GREAT!!!

electric skein reel machine

My father, Jean Harlez, has made me an electric skein reel machine. It can easily make reels out of new cone-mounted thread which is still oiled. On reels, the yarn can therefore easily be washed before being used.
